Horses and Ants – An opera in eight acts (2017) by Benjamin Orlow

Benjamin Orlow’s 24 hour-long work Horses and Ants – An opera in eight acts is shown at the Turku City Theatre’s art display on Saturday 26.5. starting from 7 am.

Horses and Ants – An opera in eight acts is a 24-hour long opera-dance-video combining footage shot in the Finnish army with opera composed and performed together with opera singer Frida Josefin Österberg and dance by choreographer and dancer Sandra Lolax.

The military institution is simultaneously dated and ominously futuristic. It is an isolated environment in a constant state of ongoing fictional wars, inspired by current global politics and historical events. The film opens up what it's like to live in an institution with a fierce hierarchy and total lack of individualism for people who grew up with the existence of social media and flexible understandings of privacy and expressive freedom.
